I had come across Alexander Technique colleagues offering AT online and had often wondered how effective it was. Surely, I thought, you had to experience hands-on to really learn AT. Then Covid-19 and lockdown arrived and my life as an Alexander practitioner changed overnight. “Close Contact Workers” could no longer offer their hands-on expertise.
It took me a while to dip my toe in the water and start to offer AT Coaching on Zoom. I realised that because AT is essentially coaching with a therapeutic element, then a lot of very useful information and feedback could be imparted online. As AT practitioners we are trained to listen, observe closely, and teach new ways of thinking and moving. All this can be done successfully online.
What Happens In a Zoom Session
Listening / Observing / Sharing Feedback / Demonstration / Coaching
Firstly we discuss your situation, your symptoms if you have any, plus any feedback from the previous session.
We may choose certain activities to explore – particularly any that are causing discomfort. Seeing you in your home environment is an ideal way for me to see you in your everyday life; working at your desk, unloading the dishwasher, preparing vegetables, walking up stairs etc
I will watch you, offer feedback and demonstrate for you to copy.
I will talk you through the Semi Supine resting activity and even without hands – on, this can be extremely beneficial.
Sessions are different from face to face AT but can encourage you to be more engaged with the process so that you have skills to take into your life. All you need is a good internet connection and laptop or tablet with inbuilt camera and the Zoom app which is free to download.
